Advantages of Registered Apprenticeship to Employers?

  • Registered Apprenticeship Program (RAP) is a proven approach for preparing workers for jobs while meeting the needs of business for a highly skilled workforce. It is an “earn and learn” model that combines on – the – job learning, provided by the sponsor that hires the apprentice, with job experience, coupled with classroom related instruction in curricula tied to the attainment of nationally recognized skills and credential. The model involves progressive increases in an apprentice’s skills and wages. Apprenticeship uses this flexible training strategy that can be customized to meet the needs of the industry. The Apprenticeship programs keep pace with advancing technologies and innovations in training and human resource development through the complete involvement of employers in the educational process. While it is used in traditional industries such as construction and manufacturing, apprenticeship programs are also instrumental for training and development in growing industries, such as health care, information technology, transportation and logistics, and energy.
  • The District of Columbia Apprentice Connect provides information on apprenticeship. If you need assistance in setting up an apprenticeship program, please contact Mr. Lewis Brown, Program Manager at [email protected] OR cell phone: 202-345-6648, should you have questions about developing an apprenticeship program.

  • There are no costs for becoming a registered apprenticeship program sponsor and OAIT Apprenticeship Training Representatives and staff will provide technical assistance free of charge. However, as a sponsor, you must provide apprentice's required classroom-related training and bear the cost of this related instruction. The cost is offset by lower starting wage of an apprentice, which amounts to a certain percentage of the skilled worker salary. For example, Registered sponsors in construction field who have been awarded Public Work contracts in the District will pay apprentices at a percentage of journey worker’s wage prevailing rate, which is another area of substantial cost savings.
